Martin Fitzgerald Lawrence is a comedian, actor and director. He achieved success as a stand-up comedian and is known for films such as Bad Boys and Big Mom’s Home. Lawrence was born on April 16, 1965 in Frankfurt, Germany, to parents Chlora and John. He was named after Presidents Martin Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy. He has five siblings, including Robert, Ray and Ursula.
Lawrence spent his childhood between Queens, New York and Landover, Maryland. He attended Fairmont Heights High School, followed by Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Maryland. The teacher encouraged him to study comedy. Lawrence took up boxing as a teenager and eventually became a contender for the Mid-Atlantic Gold Gloves. He quit the sport after suffering a serious eye injury.

Lawrence began his stand-up comedy career at an improv comedy club in New York City. From 1987 to 1988, he starred in the sitcom What’s Happening Now! ! , got his first acting role. Other early performances include Doing the Right Thing (1989), House Party (1990) and the 1992 film Boomerang with Eddie Murphy. Lawrence rose to fame in 1992 when he was chosen by entrepreneur Russell Simmons to host “Def Comedy Jam” on HBO. He followed up on the hit sitcom Martin, which aired on Fox from 1992 to 1997. He won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 1995 and 1996.
Lawrence starred alongside Will Smith as “Detective Marcus Burnett” in the 1995 action comedy “Bad Boys.” The second part of the film was released in 2003, and the third is scheduled for release in 2017. He starred in “The Thin Line Between Love and Hate” (1996) with Lynn Whitfield, “Blue Scar” (1999) with Luke Wilson and “Big Mom” The House (2000) with Nia Long.
In addition to acting and comedy, Lawrence released two albums during the 1990s. His debut, Martin Lawrence Live Talkin’ Shit, was released on East West Records in 1993. The album peaked at number 76 on the Billboard 200 and featured the singles “Boxin” and “Black Kids/white Kids”. His second album, Funk It, was released in 1995 and peaked at number 35 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart.
