Tresterman was a quarterback for the Minnesota Golden Gophers, where he served as a backup to former NFL coach Tony Dungey.
He also played at Minnesota State University-Moorehead and received his Juris Doctor from the University of Miami School of Law. He began his coaching career at the University of Miami, where he served as a quarterbacks coach. From 1985 to 1986, Trestman was the running back coach of the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings. He was quarterbacks coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1977 and quarterbacks coach for the Cleveland Browns from 1988 to 1999, where he served as offensive coordinator. Tresterman served as quarterbacks coach for the Minnesota Vikings from 1990 to 1991, before returning to the San Francisco 49ers as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 1995 to 1996. He was the quarterbacks coach of the Detroit Lions in 1987 and the Arizona Cardinals from 1998 to 2000. Tresterman was the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders from 2001 to 2003. He was the assistant head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2004 and the offensive coordinator for North Carolina State University from 2005 to 2006. His first was with the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes from 2008 to 2012, and in 2013 he got his first NFL head coaching job with the Chicago Bears. Trestman was the 2009 CFL Coach of the Year and won the Grey Cup in 2009 and 2010. In 2017, he became the head coach of the CFL Toronto Argonauts.
