Teixeira was born in Annapolis, Maryland in 1980 and grew up in Severna Park, Maryland. He attended Mount St. Joseph High School in Balletmore, Maryland, and played on the varsity baseball team.

He was drafted by the Texas Rangers in 2001 to a four-year, $9.5 million contract. He won the Silver Baseball Award (2005) for being the best hitting first baseman in the American League and the Golden Glove Award for his performance as the best defensive first baseman. He made MLB history by becoming the third switch hitter to hit 20 (or more) home runs in each of the first three seasons.
In 2007, he was injured by an embarrassing landing at first base against the Milwaukee Brewers. He turned down a contract extension with the Rangers and was traded to the Atlanta Braves in 2007. Teixeira became the second homer in the Atlanta Braves’ first three games. He was awarded NL Player of the Week and August Player of the Month for hitting .793 with three home runs.
Teixeira was traded to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2008 and led the team to a 100-win season, hitting .358 with 13 homers and 43 RBIs. After the World Series, he became a free agent. Teixeira signed a contract with the New York Yankees for $5 million with no trade terms.

Earlier in his career, he wore No. 23 in honor of his baseball icon Don Mattingly, but since Mattingly’s number was retired, Teixeira now wears No. 25. In 2009, he won a World Series championship ring, a gold glove and a silver bat, and finished second in the AL MVP voting. He also won the Golden Glove Award for first baseman in 2010, becoming the second player to hit three home runs in a game against the Boston Red Sox. The first is Lugrig. In 2011, he and teammate Curtis Granderson became the first teammates to hit 30 home runs in 115 games. This hasn’t happened since Roger Maris and Mitch Mantel in 1961.

He also established a scholarship at Mount St. Joseph High School in memory of a close friend who was involved in a fatal car accident.
In March 2009, Mark and Leigh purchased a mansion in Greenwich, Connecticut, for $6.7 million. They sold the home in August 2021 for $7 million.
