Mark Allan Hoppus was born on March 15, 1972 in Ridgecrest, California. Hops grew up in a desert town where most of the residents worked for the U.S. Department of Defense. Although most of the town’s residents were scientists working for the military, Mark later described many of the other citizens of Ridgecrest as “the deranged methamphetamine leader.”
Hops had a happy growth environment until his parents divorced when he was eight years old. The emotional impact on this little boy was profound, and he eventually lived in Monterey with his father. Unfortunately, Mark did not have the opportunity to stay with his father, who spent most of his time studying for an undergraduate degree.
After moving to Monterey, Hoppus started to skateboard and listen to punk rock music. Then he moved to Fairfax, Virginia. At a high school in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., Mark picked up the bass guitar for the first time and began to learn how to play while listening to the works of various artists.
