Marisol Escobar is a French sculptor working primarily in the New York City area. She rose to fame in the 1960s and became known for her box-like figurative works. Marisol was born on May 22, 1930 in Paris, France, to Venezuelan parents Gustavo and Josefina. She spent most of her childhood between Los Angeles and Paris. Marisol studied at the Jepson School of Art, followed by the École des Beaux-Arts. She moved to New York City in 1950 and continued her education at the Art Students League of New York. She is also studying at Hans Hoffmann’s New School for Social Research.
Profession
Marisol started out as a painter. After discovering pre-Columbian artifacts in 1951, she turned her attention to carving. Marisol was associated with Abstract Expressionists such as Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline and Jackson Pollock. Her first exhibition was at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York in 1958. That same year, she received the Design Excellence Award from the New York City Arts Council.
Marisol rose to prominence in the 1960s with her group of mixed media personalities. She has had several exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and the Stables Gallery in New York. Her influences on Pop Art include artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. She appeared in Warhol’s films “The Kiss” (1963) and 13 Most Beautiful Girls (1964). Marisol’s hits include The Last Supper, Dust Bowl Migrants and Father Damien. Her sculptural portrait of Hugh Hefner was featured on the cover of Time magazine in March 1967. Marisol was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1978. She was awarded the Premio Gabriela Mistral in 1997.
