Abramović, who considers herself the grandmother of performance art, was born on November 30, 1946 in Belgrade, Serbia. Active for more than three decades, Abramović’s performances are characterized by an exploration of the boundaries of the human body and the power of the mind.

In one of her performances, she even ignited herself in a big oil-soaked star. After cutting off her fingernails, toenails and hair and throwing them all into the fire, she transformed herself into a star. She passed out from lack of oxygen and had to be taken away by medical teams when she became inert to the flames approaching her. In the 1970s she was involved in a series of performances called the Rhythm series. During these performances, she subjected herself to a series of cuts and pain treatments. In one of her performances, she let the audience decide what she would do with the items she brought to the stage. In 1976 she moved to Amsterdam to perform with West German performer Uwe Laysiepen. They performed together for about ten years. Today, Marina is still performing on stage. In November 2005, she starred in a series titled “Seven Easy Pieces” in New York City. Marina has received numerous awards and awards, including the New York Dance and Performance Award, and in 2003 won the International Critics Association’s Best Performance Award. The University of Plymouth awarded her an honorary Doctor of Arts degree in September 2009.
