Marilyn Manson is an American rock singer, songwriter, actress, and performer. He is known for his bold costumes and controversial stage antics. His stage name is a combination of actress Marilyn Monroe and cult leader Charles Manson. He released albums such as Antichrist Superstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998). Manson was born Brian Hugh Warner on January 5, 1969, in Canton, Ohio. His parents, Barbara Warner Wyle and Hugh Angus Warner, died in 2014 and 2017, respectively. He is an only child. Manson attended Traditional Christian School, followed by Glen Oak High School. He studied journalism and drama at Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Manson started his career as a music journalist. He writes for 25th Parallel, a lifestyle magazine based in South Florida. During his tenure, he interviewed musicians such as My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nail. Manson and guitarist Scott Putesky (Daisy Berkowitz) formed the band “Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids” in 1989. The band later dropped “Spooky Kids” from the name. In 1993, they signed a recording contract with Trent Reznor’s record label. In addition to Manson, the current members of the band include Twiggy, Paul Wiley, Gil Sharone and Tyler Bates.
Manson’s debut album, Portrait of an American Family, was released in July 1994 by Nothing and Interscope Records. It produced three singles “Lunchbox”, “Dope Hat” and “Get Your Gunn”. EP, Smells Like Children, released in 1995. It sold 1.3 million copies and was certified platinum by the RIAA. The band’s second album, Antichrist Superstar, was released in 1996. It peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 and number two on the Canadian Albums Chart. The album has sold over 7 million copies worldwide. It spawned the singles “The Beautiful People”, “Tourniquet”, “Antichrist Superstar” and “Man That You Fear”. The second EP Remix & Repent was released in 1997. Manson’s other albums include Mechanical Animals (1998), The Golden Age of Weirdness (2003), Low High (2009) and Upside Down Paradise (2017). He won the MTV Video Music Award in 1999 and the Kerrang Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015. He has been nominated for 4 Grammy Awards.
Manson made his debut in David Lynch’s “The Lost Highway” (1997). He played “Christina Superstar” in Party Monsters (2003), opposite Macaulay Culkin. His film credits include Jawbreaker (1999) with Rose McGowan and The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things (2004) with Asia Argento. He has guest appearances on TV shows such as California State, Eastbound and Down, Salem and Sons of Anarchy. Manson’s autobiography, The Long Hard Road out of Hell, was published in February 1998. It was co-authored with Rolling Stone’s Neil Strauss. His second book, The Sacred Forest, was not published. It was written between 1999 and 2000.
