Marco Rubio is a Republican politician, U.S. Senator and attorney. He was the 2016 Republican presidential candidate before dropping out in March 2016.
Rubio was born on May 28, 1971 in Miami, Florida. His mother, Oria, was a hotel maid and his father, Mario, was a bartender. He has three siblings, Mario, Barbara and Veronica. Rubio attended South Miami High School, where he became a great football player. He won a scholarship to Takio College in Missouri, but transferred to the University of Florida a year later. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1993. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Miami School of Law in 1996.

Rubio began his political career in the late 1990s and by 2000 he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. He became Majority Leader in 2003 and was named Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives from 2006-2008. As a speaker, he presented “100 Innovative Ideas for Florida’s Future” to the Legislature in 2005. In 2010, Rubio defeated Charlie Crist and Kendrick Meek to free Mel Martinez from the Senate. He took office on January 3, 2011. He was chosen as the Republican response to President Obama’s 2013 State of the Union address. Rubio announced that he would run for president in April 2015. He withdrew from the race in March 2016 after losing the Florida primary to Donald Trump.
