A newcomer to the billionaires list, Lutz Mario Helmig is a doctor by training who founded Helios Hospital Group, an acclaimed operator of medical facilities. Originally known as Dr. Helmig GmbH, the company was established in the late 1980s.
At the time, he also formed the hospital operator Asklepios Klinikum with Bernard Broermann. However, he decided to sell his shares in Asklepios Klinikum in 1994 to focus only on Dr. Helmig GmbH, which was renamed Helios Clinics the following year. A decade later, he sold Helios to rival Fresenius for about 1.5 billion euros ($2 billion). Next, he founded ATON GmbH, which still operates as an investment company of the Helmig family and includes around 14 companies mainly active in the B2B market. Lutz Mario Helmig personally holds a 70 percent stake in Fulda-based ATON, which generated 2.2 billion euros ($3 billion) in revenue in 2012.
