Luis Fonsi is a Puerto Rican singer, songwriter, composer and actor. He is best known for his hit “Despacito” with rapper Daddy Yankee. His recordings include Comenzare (1998), Palabras del Silencio (2008) and Tierra Firme (2011). Fonsi was born on April 15, 1978 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, as Luis Alfonso Rodriguez Lopez-Sepero. His parents are Alfonso Rodriguez and Delia Lopez-Cepero. He has three younger siblings, Jean, Tatiana and Ramon. Fonsi and his family moved to the United States when he was 10 years old. They settled in Orlando, Florida, where he attended Dr. Phillips High School. He later studied singing and vocal techniques at Florida State University.

Fonsi first sang as a member of the San Juan Children’s Choir. He was inspired by the boy band Menudo. During high school, he played in the band ‘the Big Guys’ with Joey Fatone (*NSYNC). Fonsi signed his first recording contract with the record label Universal Music Latino. His debut album Comenzare (I Will Begin) was released in September 1998. It peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Latin Albums Chart. The album was certified platinum and sold over 100,000 copies. His follow-up album, Forever, was released in June 2000. That same year, he performed the duet “Mi Reflejo” with Christina Aguilera. In 2000, he also composed a Latin Grammy Award winning song for Ednita Nazario.

A remix of Despacito featuring Justin Bieber was released in April 2017.
Besides music, Fonsi also did some performances. In 2004, he played “Roy” in the Mexican TV series “Coazones al limite”. Before that, he was a special guest on Nickelodeon’s sitcom Tyna. Fonsi performed briefly on Broadway’s Forever Tango set in 2013. He was a guest performer on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon in September 2017. Other TV shows include Viva la Vida, Conan and Good Morning America.
