Lou Pearlman is an American music producer and manager of NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys. He is also the mastermind behind a $300 million Ponzi scheme and bank fraud. Pearlman was born Louis Jay Pearlman on June 19, 1954, in Flushing, New York. His father, Hy, owns a dry cleaner and his mother, Reenie, is a school lunch lady. He is also the cousin of folk singer Art Garfunkel. Perlman attended Flushing High School, followed by Queens College. He graduated in accounting.

Pearlman ventured into the aviation industry in the late 1970s. He established the company, Airship Enterprises Ltd, which was short-lived. His second attempt, the International Airship, launched in 1985, proved more successful. The company profits from leasing airships to well-known companies such as McDonald’s, MetLife and SeaWorld. Airship International was forced to close after its share price plummeted.
Pearlman began his musical career as the founder of Trans Continental Records. He formed and signed the Backstreet Boys in 1993, with Johnny Wright serving as the organization’s manager. The Backstreet Boys shot to fame and quickly became the best-selling boy band of all time. Pearlman saw similar success with NSYNC. Formed in 1995, the band has sold more than 55 million records worldwide. Pearlman’s other bands include O-Town, US5, Natural and LFO. He has collaborated with many artists including Aaron Carte and Jordan Knight.
Pearlman ran a 20-year Ponzi scheme to lure investors into his transcontinental savings scheme. The state took control of the company in February 2007 and Pearlman was arrested in June 2007. He was indicted on June 27, 2007 and charged with bank, mail and wire fraud. Pearlman was sentenced to 25 years in prison on May 21, 2008.
