Loretta Lynn is an American country music singer and songwriter. She is one of the most respected female country musicians of all time. Her records include The Coal Miner’s Daughter (1970) and Van Lear Rose (2004). Lynn was born Loretta Webb on April 14, 1932 in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky. She was raised in a coal mining community by her parents Clara and Ted Webb. She is the second of eight children. Lynn is of Scottish-Irish and Cherokee ancestry. She is named after the famous actress Loretta Young.

Lynn started singing at her local church at a very young age. She taught herself to play guitar. She also performed locally with her first band, the Trailblazers. Lynn signed a recording contract with Zero Records in 1960. Her debut single “I’m a Honky Tonk Girl” was released in March 1960. The song rose to number 14 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Lynn later settled in Nashville, Tennessee, where she was soon signed to Deka Records. Her first Decca single, “Success”, was released in April 1962. It became her first top 10 single after reaching number 6.
In December 1963, Decca released Lynn’s debut studio album, Loretta Lynn Sings. It ranks second in the national rankings. Her 1970 album, The Coal Miner’s Daughter, sold over 500,000 copies and was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It was adapted into a 1980 film starring Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones. Lynn’s other projects include Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind), You Ain’t Woman Enough, Fist City and Van Lear Rose. She is also known for the more controversial “The Pill,” “One’s on the Way,” and “Rated ‘X.” Lynn’s upcoming album, Woult It Be Great, is scheduled to be released by Sony Legacy Recordings in 2017.
Lynn was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1983), Country Music Hall of Fame (1988) and Songwriters Hall of Fame (2008). In 2013, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. She has also won multiple CMA, Grammy and ACM awards.

Loretta Lynn’s net worth is estimated to be $65 million. She was married to talent manager “Oliver Lynn” in 1948 until his death in 1996 of complications from diabetes. They have six children: Passy, Peggy, Jack Benny, Ernest Ray, Betty Sue, and Sissy. Jack Benny and Betty Sue died at the age of 34 and 64 respectively.
Lynn suffered a stroke at his Tennessee home on Thursday, May 4, 2017. She was taken to a Nashville hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
