Lil Wayne is a Grammy Award-winning American rapper, singer and songwriter. He has sold over 100 million records, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. Wayne was born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. on September 27, 1982 in New Orleans, Louisiana. His biological parents, Jess Duckart and Dwayne Michael Turner, separated when he was a toddler. He grew up in Hollygrove before moving to East New Orleans. Wayne attended Eleanor McMain Middle School followed by Marion Abramson High School. He also attended the University of Houston and the University of Phoenix.

Wayne started rapping at the age of 8. He recorded his first collaborative project, True Story, for Cash Money Records in 1993. He joined the hip-hop group Hot Boys in 1996. Other members include BG, Juvenile and Turk. The Hot Boys released their debut album Get It How U Live! in 1997. Their second album, Guerrilla Warfare, was released in 1999. It peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and featured the singles “We on Fire” and “I Need a Hot Girl”. The third album, Let ‘Em Burn, was released in 2003.
Wayne has released 11 studio albums as a solo artist. His solo debut The Block Is Hot (1999) reached number three on the Billboard charts. It was later certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Wayne released the first part of his “Tha Carter” album series in the summer of 2004. His most successful album, Tha Carter III, was released in 2008 and sold over one million copies in its first week. The album went on to win four Grammys, including best rap album. Wayne founded his own record label, Young Money Entertainment, in 2005. Past and present performers include Nicki Minaj, Drake, Tyga, Omarion and DJ Khaled.
