Lil Jon is an American rapper, DJ and music producer. He is best known for his hip-hop style known as “crunk”. Lil Jon was born Jonathan Smith on January 17, 1971 in Atlanta, Georgia. His mother, Carrie Smith-Williams, was an adoptive parent, and his father died of bone marrow cancer. Lil Jon attended Frederick Douglass High School in Atlanta. He studied for two years at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.

Lil Jon started out as a DJ in various Atlanta nightclubs. From 1993 to 2000 he worked for Jermaine Dupri’s label So So Def Recordings. Lil Jon formed the band “Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz” in the mid-1990s. They were signed to Mirror Image Records and their debut studio album Get Crunk, Who U Wit: Da Album was released in October 1997. The band’s second album, We Still Crunk!!, was released in 2000 by BME Recordings. Their third album Put Yo Hood Up (2001) included the single “Bia’ Bia'” with Ludacris and Too Short. A fifth album titled “Crunk Juice” peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 in 2004. It features the single “What U Gon’ Do” with Lil Scrappy and “Real N!gga Roll Call” with Ice Cube.
Lil Jon co-wrote and produced Usher’s 2004 hit “Yeah!”. Other notable works include “Salt Shaker” by Ying Yang Twins and “Shorty Wanna Ride” by Young Buck. Lil Jon released his debut solo album “Crunk Rock” in 2010. It includes guest appearances by artists such as R. Kelly, Soulja Boy, Stephen Marley and Pitbull.
In addition to music, Lil Jon has also appeared in several movies and TV shows. His big-screen debut was the 2004 comedy film Soul Plane. He had small roles with Alyson Hannigan in Dating Movie (2006) and Horror Movie 4 (2006) with Anna Faris. Lil Jon was a contestant in Donald Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice in 2011 and 2013. Other TV shows include Pimp My Ride (2009) and Comedy Bang! Bang! (2015).
