Lena Horn was born in Bedford, Brooklyn, New York in June 1917 and died in May 2010. Her career spanned more than 70 years and she appeared in film, television and on stage.
At 16, she joined the Cotton Club choir as a nightclub performer before moving to Hollywood, where she was later blacklisted due to the Red Scare and her political activism. Horn participated in the Washington parade in 1963, and in 1980 starred in her single-woman show Lena Horn: Ladies of Broadway and Her Music. Her most successful singles include the songs “Stormy Weather”, “One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)”, “Deed I Do” and “Love Me or Leave Me”. In 1960, Horn received two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for film and recording. She was inducted into the Image Awards Hall of Fame in 1982 and received two Primetime Emmy nominations and four Grammy Awards. Lena Horn died of congestive heart failure on May 9, 2010 at the age of 92.
