Laurie Hernandez is an American gymnast and Olympic medalist. She was born on June 9, 2000, to parents Wanda and Anthony in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She has two older siblings, Jereza and Marcus. Laurie committed to the Florida Gator gymnastics program at the University of Florida in 2014. She forfeited her NCAA eligibility ahead of the 2016 Olympics.

Laurie began training in gymnastics at the age of 6. She trains under MG Elite Gymnastics coach Maggie Haney. Laurie finished first in floor exercise at the 2013 Texas American Classic. She was subsequently added to the U.S. Junior National Team. Lowry missed six months with an injury in 2014. She returned to racing in 2015, winning the Jesolo City Trophy and the American Classic All-around title.

Laurie made her senior career debut in 2016. She competed in the balance beam at the Jesolo City Trophy in Italy and won a gold medal. She won another gold medal at the Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships in Washington. Laurie, Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman and Madison Kocian represented Team USA at the 2016 Rio Olympics. They won an Olympic gold medal in the team event.
