Larry Page was born on March 26, 1973 in East Lansing, Michigan (the seat of Michigan State University). His father, Cal Victor Paige Sr., is described as a pioneer in computer science. Larry started playing computers and creating inventions when he was very young. He attended Okemos Montessori School from 1975 to 1979. He then attended East Lansing High School and graduated in 1991. During the two summers of high school, Larry attended an art camp called Interlochen Art Center, where he focused on saxophone. In his undergraduate education, he received a bachelor of science degree in computer engineering from the University of Michigan.
Stanford and the creation of Google
After graduating from the University of Michigan, Larry studied computer science at Stanford University. As part of this plan, he needs to find the thesis topic. He finally decided to explore the mathematical properties and link structure of the World Wide Web. His main inspiration is that people can judge the quality of a website based on the number of backlinks received from other websites. This revelation reflects how academics use citations to judge quality.
A PhD student named Sergey Brin finally collaborated with Larry to complete this project, which became known as “Backrub”. They co-authored a paper entitled “Analysis of Large-scale Hypertext Web Search Engines”. Their paper became the most downloaded scientific document in the history of the Internet at that time.
Next, they used the Backrub web crawler to develop an algorithm that provides a quality score for every website on the Internet. They call this algorithm “PageRank”, which is both a reference to an Internet page and Larry’s last name. After developing crawlers and algorithms, the next logical creation was a search engine to display results.
In 1998, after Larry and Sergey were basically kicked out of campus for using too much university computer resources, they merged Google into a private company. The original domain name was actually “Googol”, which was a number consisting of 1 and 100 zeros. They invested $100,000 from a professor at Stanford University, David Cheriton. Google went public on August 20, 2004 under the leadership of CEO Eric Schmidt, and Schmidt was appointed as a professional company. Schmidt served as CEO until 2011, at which time Larry returned to the position. He served as CEO until December 2019, when he and Sergey both left the company. They still own most of the company’s shares and serve on the board of directors, but have no daily work. He was replaced by Sundar Pichai as CEO. Today, the company’s revenue exceeds 130 billion U.S. dollars.

Since 2007, Larry has been married to Lucinda Southworth. They got married on Richard Branson’s private island, Necker Island. They have two children. Beginning in 2009, Pages began to acquire and demolish most of the houses adjacent to their main house.
