Jackson began his football career at Boynton Beach High School under coach Rick Swain. He was rated a 4-star prospect at Florida State and the 8th dual-threat quarterback in the nation. He also became the first Boynton Beach student to win the Lou Groza Awards High School Player of the Year. As a senior, Jackson threw for 1,293 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also had 1,039 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns.
Jackson continued his football career at the University of Louisville. He was recruited by Lamar Thomas. He picked the Louisville Cardinals from Florida State, South Carolina State and Auburn’s offer list. Jackson played 12 games in his rookie season. He passed for 1,840 yards with 12 touchdowns and rushed for 960 yards with 11 touchdowns. Jackson received MVP honors at the 2015 Music City Bowl. In a win over Texas A&M, he set records with 226 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns.
Jackson received the 2016 Heisman Trophy on December 10, 2016. He made history by becoming the first Louisville player to receive the award. He is also the recipient of the 2016 Walter Camp Prize and the Maxwell Prize. Jackson’s 2016 honors include Sports News Player of the Year and ACC Offensive Player of the Year. As a junior, he played 13 games for 3,660 passing yards, 27 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Jackson was selected by the Baltimore Ravens with the 32nd overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
