Kunal started his career in the critically acclaimed commercial film Rang De Basanti, for which his performance was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor (2006).

Kapoor started his career as assistant director of the Amitabh Bachchan film Aks. He began his acting career training under the tutelage of theatre legend Barry John. Kapoor continued his theatre career at Motley, a theatre group run by Naseeruddin Shah. He made his film debut with Tabu in Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities. In 2006, Kapoor shot to fame with the hit film Rang De Basanti, which was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2007 BAFTAs.
