Kirk Douglas is an American actor, producer and writer. His film credits include The Bad and the Beautiful (1952), Spartacus (1960) and Lust for Life (1956). Douglas was born Isol Danilovich on December 9, 1916 in Amsterdam, New York. His parents Bertha and Harry were Russian Jewish immigrants. Douglas completed his bachelor’s degree at St. Lawrence University in 1939. He later took acting courses at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. Douglas served briefly in the US Navy from 1941 to 1944. He was discharged from the hospital with injuries.

Douglas made his debut in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946) starring Barbara Stanwyck. He had small roles in “Out of the Past,” “I Walk Alone,” and “My Dear Secretary.” Douglas got his big break when he played Michael “Mickey” Kelly in the theatrical sports film Champion (1949). His performance earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Douglas played “Chuck Tatum” in Billy Wilder’s film Ace in the Hole (1951). He was nominated for a second Academy Award for his role as “Jonathan Shields” in “Bad and Beautiful” (1952).

Douglas’ next major role was as “Vincent van Gogh” in the 1956 biopic “Desire for Life.” The film is based on Owen Stone’s 1934 novel of the same name. Douglas founded Bryna Productions, a film production company, in 1955. The company has produced a total of 25 films, starting with 1955’s “Indian Fighter.” Other notable works include “Paths of Glory” (1957), “Spartacus” (1960), “A Lonely World” Brave (1962) and Tough Guy (1986). As a director, Douglas is known for the films Scalawag (1973) and Posse (1975).

Douglas was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Jimmy Carter in 1981. In 1991, he was awarded the American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award. Douglas received an honorary Oscar in 1996 for his contributions to the film industry for more than 50 years. In 2001, he received the National Medal of Art.

In addition to acting, Douglas has written ten novels and memoirs. His first book, Lagman’s Son, was published in 1988. Selected works include Dancing with the Devil (1990), Gifts (1992), Mountain Climbing (2001) and My Luck (2003).
