Kim Jong Un is the supreme leader of North Korea. He is also the chairman of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK). Kim was born on January 8, 1984 in Pyongyang, North Korea. His father, Kim Jong Il, was North Korea’s military leader and ruler from 1994 to 2011. His mother, Ko Yong-hee, was an opera singer. She died in May 2004 at the age of 51. His grandfather was Kim Il Sung. He has four siblings, Kim Jong Nam, Kim Yo Jong, Kim Jong Chol and Kim Seol Song. Kim attended the Bern International School in Gumligen, Switzerland. He continued his education at the Kim Il Sung Military University in Pyongyang.

Kim Jong-un was named a candidate for the Supreme People’s Assembly in early 2009. He became Chairman of the National Defense Council in April 2009. Two months later, he was named Minister of State Security. In September 2010, Kim Jong-un was appointed vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea. He held this position until April 2012. After his death, he succeeded his father Kim Jong-il as the supreme commander of the Korean People’s Army. In 2011, he was sworn in on December 30, 2011.

On April 11, 2012, he was appointed chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea. He served as the representative of the Thirteenth Supreme People’s Congress.
