Originally from Kalamazoo, Michigan and a graduate of Otsego High School, VanDam still resides in Michigan with his wife Shirley and sons Jackson and Nicholas.
He is the all-time champion of professional bass fishing with over $5.6 million in earnings as of August 2011. VanDam won four Bassmaster Classic titles (2001, 2005, 2010, 2011), seven Toyota Tundra Angler of the Year titles (1992, 1996, 1999, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011), also in 2001 FLW Angler of the Year. VanDam has primarily caught the Bass Anglers Athletes Association (BASS) Bassmasters Championship Series throughout his career. He started his career in 1990 at age 23 and in 1992 at 25 he became the youngest person to win the BASS Angler of the Year title. He and Rick Clunn are the only anglers to have won four Bassmaster Classic titles. His career 20 BASS Championship Series victories are the most career victories in a Bassmasters Championship. VanDam received ESPN’s first Outdoor Player of the Year ESPY Award in 2002.
