Kevin Gates is an American rapper and singer. He was born Kevin Jerome Gilliard on February 5, 1986 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He grew up in Baton Rouge and started rapping at the age of 14. Gates was raised by his mother, who also spent a lot of time with his grandparents. He briefly attended Baton Rouge Community College before dropping out.

Gates first gained attention when he released the mixtape “Pick Of Da Litter” in 2007. In 2008, he released the successful single “Get in the Way” with Lil Boosie. He was detained and released from prison in 2011. He returned to music with a brief stint with Lil Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment. He released the mixtape “Make ’em Believe” in 2012, followed by “The Luca Brasi Story” in 2013.
Gates signed with Atlantic Records in February 2013. His street album “Stranger Than Fiction” was released a few months later and peaked at number 37 on the Billboard 200. His second street album “By Any Means” dropped in 2014 and topped the Billboard charts. Gates’ debut studio album Islah, named after his daughter, was released on January 29, 2016.
