The Royals selected Appier with the ninth overall pick in the first round of the 1987 amateur draft. On June 4, 1989, he made his Major League Baseball debut as a member of the Royals at the age of 21. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound pitcher played with the Royals until 1999, then with the Oakland Athletics from 1999 to 2000, the New York Mets in 2001, and the New York Mets from 2002 to 2003 Plays for the Anaheim Angels.
