Kerry Washington is an American actress and activist. She is best known for her role on the ABC TV series Scandal. Washington was born on January 31, 1977 in the Bronx, New York. Her father, Earl, is a real estate agent, and her mother, Valerie, is an education professor. She attended Spencer School in Manhattan and performed with TADA! Youth theatre. Washington continued his education at George Washington University. She completed a double major in anthropology and sociology in 1998.

Washington made his television debut on the 1994 ABC Afterschool Special. Her film debut was the 2000 feature film Our Song. She had a memorable role in the 2001 dance film Saving The Last Dance.
