Kenny Baker is a British actor known for his role as R2-D2 in the “Star Wars” series of films. He was born on August 24, 1934 in Birmingham, England, his original name is Kenneth George Baker. Although his parents are of medium height, Baker suffers from dwarfism. He was educated at a boarding school in Kent.

Baker initially wanted to be a carver like his father. Due to lack of education, this dream was never realized. Baker started his entertainment business in 1951 as a member of the Dwarf and Dwarf Theater Company. He later developed his own comedy show called “Minitones” with British artist Jack Purvis. His early film roles include “Circus of Horror” (1960), “Man of the World” (1962) and “Dave Allen at large” (1975).
Baker played the groundbreaking role of “R2-D2” in “Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope” (1977) directed by George Lucas. The role of R2-D2 has been repeated many times, including the Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). Baker’s other famous films include Elephant Man with Anthony Hopkins (1980), Labyrinth with David Bowie (1986) and Willow with Val Kilmer (1988). His biography “From Tiny Acorns: The Story of Kenny Baker” was published in 2009.
