He competed in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series from 1981 to 2013 and currently races on local dirt and asphalt tracks across the country while driving part-time in the ARCA Racing Series. He was born in Fenton, Missouri in 1955, where he began his racing career.

During the 1990s and 2000s, Schrader competed in as many as 100 races in a variety of genres, including NASCAR’s National and Regional Tour series, ARCA, short track and dirt track races. During his career, he played in 760 games over 29 years. He has received numerous awards, including the 1985 Winston Cup Series Rookie of the Year Award, the 1980 USAC Rookie of the Year Award, and the 2009 National Off-Road Model Hall of Fame Athlete Award. He was the 1982 USAC Silver Champion, the 1983 USAC Sprint Racing Champion, the 1989 and 1990 Busch Clash Champion, and the 1988, 1989 and 1990 Daytona 500 Pole Champion. He owns a dirt late model and dirt convertible wheels. Both cars, along with his Camping World Truck Series and ARCA series, are sponsored by Federated Auto Parts. He owns the I-55 Speedway in Peverley, Missouri, and the Macon Speedway near Macon, Illinois, with Kenny Wallace, Tony Stewart and local promoter Bob Sargent. Schrader is married to Ann Schrader, and they have two children, Dorothy and Sheldon. The family currently resides in Concord, North Carolina. Even after retiring, he still raced occasionally and finished 10th in the 2017 Little 500 Sprint.
