The Houston Astros selected him in the third round of the 1984 amateur draft. He worked hard on the club’s farm system before making his Major League Baseball debut on July 16, 1987.
He played for the Astros until 1994 when he was a member of the San Diego Padres from 1995 to 1998. Caminietti later played for the Astros a second time from 1999 to 2000 before joining the Texas Rangers and Atlanta Braves in 2001. Carminiti was last seen in an MLB game against the Warriors on October 7, 2001. He finished his career with a .272 batting average, along with 239 home runs and 983 at-bats.
