Katie Ledecky is an American swimmer and five-time Olympic gold medalist. She was born Kathleen Genevieve Ledecky on March 17, 1997 in Washington, DC. Her father, David Ledecky, is a lawyer, and her mother, Mary Hagan, is a former college swimmer. She has an older brother named Michael. Ledecky grew up in Bethesda, Maryland, where she attended Sacred Heart Ridge School. Her performance as a swimmer earned her an athletic scholarship to Stanford University in California.

Ledecky started her swimming journey at the age of 6. She set several high school records, including the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle. Ledecky also holds her high school record for the 100-yard breaststroke. She continues to train at the National Capital Swimming Club under the tutelage of swimming instructor Yuri Suguiyama.

Ledecky made his Olympic debut at the 2012 London Olympics. She won gold in the 800-meter freestyle in a record time. Since then, Ledecky has broken numerous records in major competitions such as the Pan Pacific and World Championships. She is a nine-time world champion and world record holder in the 400, 800 and 1500 freestyle. She was also a member of Team USA at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Ledecky was named US Swimmer of the Year from 2013 to 2015. She was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2016.
