Kate McKinnon is an American comedian, actress and actor on Saturday Night Live. She was born Kathryn McKinnon Berthold on January 6, 1984, in Sea Cliffs, New York. Her mother, Laura Campbell, was an educator and her late father, Michael Thomas Berthold, was an architect. She has a younger sister named Emily Lynn who is also a comedian. McKinnon attended North Shore High School, followed by Columbia University. She graduated in 2006 with a degree in theatre. While attending Columbia University, she co-founded the improv comedy group Tea Party.

McKinnon made her TV debut in the LGBT-themed series The Big Gay Sketch Show. She played various roles, including “Fitzwilliam,” a gender-nonconforming teenager.
