Cary Joji Fukunaga was born on July 10, 1977 in Oakland, California. He is best known for writing and directing the 2009 film Sin Nombre (for which he won the 2009 Sundance Director Award), the 2011 film “Jane Eyre” and the 2014 HBO series “True Detective” (for which he won the 2014 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series).
Fukunaga was quoted as saying that he “started writing fictional stories and small scripts when I was in fifth grade” and that he wanted to be a snowboarder early in his life. He got his first taste of the film/film industry when he landed a position as a camera intern and subsequently applied to film school. He graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 1999 with a BA in History and attended the Grenoble Institute of Political Studies (IEP). He then enrolled in the Graduate Film Program at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Fukunaga continues to direct and write short films, including multi-award winning Sin Nombre; Jane Eyre has won an Oscar for Best Costume Design Achievement for costume designer Michael O’Connor and the 2012 Goya Award for Best European Film. It was also nominated for the 2012 BAFTA Award (Best Costume Design) and several other awards. He has also worked as a behind-the-scenes photographer for several short films and documentaries. He has been awarded a number of grants, including the Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship, the John H. Johnson Film Award/Princess Grace Foundation Fellowship, and the Katrin Catledge Foundation Grant.
