Kamala Harris is an American politician, a member of the Democratic Party, and the 49th Vice President of the United States. She is also a lawyer and writer. Harris previously served as the U.S. Senator from California. She became the first South Asian American and the second African American woman to occupy a seat in the U.S. Senate. Prior to this, she served as the 32nd attorney general of California (2011-17) and the 27th district attorney of San Francisco (2004-11). In January 2019, Harris announced his bid for the 2020 presidential election (Democratic nomination). She finally withdrew from the competition on December 3, 2019.
Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964 in Oakland, California. Her mother Shyamala Gopalan (died in 2009) was a cancer researcher/civil rights activist, and her father Donald Harris was a professor at Stanford University. They are descendants of Tamil Indians and Jamaicans respectively. The two separated when she was 7 years old. Harris’ sister Maya is a political analyst at MSNBC. Her brother-in-law Tony West is Uber’s lawyer and general counsel.

Growing up, Harris attended both Hindu temples and black Baptist churches. At the age of 12, she and her mother moved to Montreal, Canada. She attended Xishan High School on the outskirts of Xishan. Harris completed her undergraduate studies at Howard University (1986). Her major is political science and economics. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Fellowship. Harris moved back to the United States to study as a graduate student. She received her JD from Hastings School of Law (University of California) in 1989. She was accredited by the California State Bar in 1990.
Harris started her career in the early 1990s. She served as the District Attorney for 8 years (1990-98) in Alameda County, California. In 1998, she became an executive lawyer in the San Francisco Professional Criminal Division. In 2000, Harris was hired by City Attorney Louise Renne of the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office. She was appointed as the head of the community and neighborhood department. During her tenure, she founded California’s first Bureau of Children’s Justice.
In 2003, Harris defeated the current Terence Hallinan (Terence Hallinan) to become the seat of the San Francisco City and County District Attorney. She held this position from January 2004 to January 2011. One of her accomplishments is the “Get Back on Track Program”, which provides a second opportunity for non-violent offenders (using vocational training and education programs). In 2010, Harris narrowly defeated Republican Steve Curry in the California general election. She became the 32nd attorney general of California and held this position from January 2011 to January 2017.
Harris will later succeed Barbara Boxer as the U.S. Senator from California (2017-). Her victory marked the first South Asian American and the second African American woman to hold the above-mentioned position. On January 21, 2019, Kamala Harris officially announced his candidacy for the 2020 presidential election. She seeks the Democratic nomination. During her official campaign kick-off, more than 20,000 people came to support her. Harris was strong at the beginning, but as the game progresses, her poll numbers will drop to single digits. On December 3, 2019, Harris withdrew her campaign for the Democratic nomination due to lack of funds (“My presidential campaign simply does not have the financial resources we need to continue.”). Harris was selected by Democrat Joe Biden as his running partner in the 2020 presidential election. After their victory, she was sworn in as the 49th Vice President of the United States.
In addition to her political career, Harris is also a writer. Her first book “Criminal Smart: Career Prosecutors’ Plan to Make Us Safer” was published by Chronicle Books in October 2009. It was co-authored by Joan O’C Hamilton. In January 2019, she published two more books, “The Truth We Hold: A Journey to America” and “Superheroes Everywhere”, the latter for children aged 3 to 7.
