His seventh-grade teacher introduced him to bodybuilding. Green competed in national gymnastics and won the 1999 NPC Universe Championship.
He took a five-year hiatus from the competition and won the 2004 NPC Tem Universe competition. Winning the competition qualified him as an IFBB professional bodybuilder. He finished first at the 2011 New York Pro Championship and third at the 2011 Mr. Olympia. He finished second in the 2012 Mr. Olympia competition and second in the 2013 Mr. Olympia competition. Greene has been featured in the documentary Overkill and Redemption, which focuses on his race preparation and training. In 2013, he also starred in the film Generation Iron.
