He attended Beverly Hills High School and played center and tackle for the football team, although he also competed in track and field and broke a 30-year shot put record.
After graduation, Hauptman attended Canyon College in Santa Clarita. He played one season at left back before moving to Florida International University. Hauptman was named captain of the offensive line in 2011 and finished his collegiate career starting in all 37 games he played. Phil Steele named him a playoff All-League team in 2011 and 2012, and he was named to the All-Suns Second Team in 2011. Hauptmann was nominated for the Outland Award in 2012, the highest honor an offensive lineman can receive in college. After being unselected in the 2013 draft, Hauptman was signed by the Cleveland Browns as a free agent. He was later released and re-signed to the training squad. In September 2013, he was signed by the Seattle Seahawks to the Browns’ practice team, although he did not appear in any games this season.
