Julian Assange is an Australian computer programmer, journalist and activist. He is the founder and editor-in-chief of WikiLeaks. Assange was born on 3 July 1971 in Townsville, Queensland. His biological parents were Kristen Ann Hawkins and John Shipton. The two separated and Kristen later married Brett Assange. A few years later, the relationship ended in divorce. Assange attended several different schools during his childhood. He studied mathematics and computer programming at Central Queensland University, then the University of Melbourne.

Assange got his first computer at the age of 16. He formed the hacker group “Subversives International” in 1987 under the alias Mendax. The group hacked into multiple organizations including NASA, Citibank, the Pentagon and U.S. Department of Defense facilities. In 1994, Assange was charged with more than 30 hacking offences. He was released on good conduct bail after pleading guilty and paying a fine.
Assange started his career as a programmer and software developer in 1994. He has worked on several projects, including the Transmission Control Protocol port scanner strobe.c, PostgreSQL, and the Rubberhose Deny Encryption System. Assange founded WikiLeaks in 2006. He serves as the organization’s editor-in-chief and director. WikiLeaks collects and releases classified information, news leaks and other classified information to the world. Assange moved to the UK in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden. He was granted asylum by the Ecuadorian government in 2012.
