Judith Kaye is a retired American judge who later became the first female chief judge of New York State. She was born on August 4, 1938 in Monticello, New York. She completed higher education at Barnard College (BA) and New York University School of Law (LL.B). Kaye qualified as a lawyer in New York State in 1963. She started working at the law firm Sullivan & Cromwell. From 1983 to 1993, she served as an associate judge of the New York Court of Appeals. She was appointed Chief Justice by Mario Cuomo on March 23, 1993. She retired in 2008 and was appointed Chairman of the Judicial Nomination Committee in 2009. She helped establish the non-profit organization “Court Innovation Center.” Over the years, she has written numerous publications and received multiple awards/honors. In 2006, she filed a 27-page objection to support marriage equality and same-sex couples. She is married to lawyer Stephen Rackow Kaye, and they have three children together. Judith Kaye passed away on January 7, 2016, at the age of 77. The cause of her death was cancer.
