Joseph Wapner is a retired American judge and television personality. He is best known as the number one star of the reality show People’s Court. Joseph Albert Wapner was born to Jewish parents on November 15, 1919, in Los Angeles, California. His parents are Max and Franny, and he has an older sister named Erin. Wapner attended Hollywood High School. He completed his BA and Juris Doctorate at the University of Southern California.

During World War II, Wapner served in the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged with the rank of lieutenant. He was also awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his service. Wapner began his legal career in the late 1950s. He served 2 years on the Los Angeles City Court followed by 18 years on the Los Angeles County Superior Court. Wapner was Chief Justice from 1969 to 1970 and President of the California Society of Judges from 1975 to 1976.
Wapner gained further popularity as the first president of the live-action court series The People’s Court. From 1981 to 1993, he served a total of 12 seasons. His television credits also include Animal Court (1998-2000). Wapner’s star was added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2009.
