He is a lawyer, graduated from the National Autonomous University of Honduras, and was the President of the Student Association (1988-89). He is also a graduate of the State University of New York in Social and Legal Sciences with a Master of Public Administration and studied Legislation at the National Autonomous University of Honduras. He is a businessman in coffee farming in his hometown of Gracias, a businessman in the radio and television industry, and a hotel owner. He gained notoriety in Honduras when Liberal leader Rafael Pineda Ponce called him a “cipote malcriado” (spoiled child). He started his presidential campaign in Intibuca and La Paz in July 2013 under the name El Pueblo Propone (People’s Proposal in English).
