He is best known for his roles in bel canto operas. On June 4, 2007, he received the country’s highest medal, the Gran Cruz de la Orden del Sol del Perú.
In May 2004 he was awarded the Orden al Mérito Cultural de Lima by the Mayor of Lima; the Orden al Mérito por servicios distinguidos en el grado de Gran Cruz by the President Alejandro Toledo; and was appointed Professor Emeritus at the University of San Martin de Pores. Flórez also appears on the 2 sol stamp, part of a series of five stamps issued in November 2004 honoring contemporary Peruvian musicians. The portrait of Flórez used on the stamp was taken by British photographer Trevor Leighton and was also used on the cover of his 2003 CD Una Furtiva Lagrima. Flórez was present at the birth of Flórez’s son Leandro on April 9, 2011, a short distance from Flórez’s aboard Le comte Ory In less than an hour of his stage, he was broadcast live to the world at the Metropolitan Theatre. Their daughter Lucia Stella was born on January 1, 2014 in their home in Pesaro, Italy.
