He emigrated to England and then to the United States. As a welterweight, he won by 14 knockouts in his first 20 fights. He challenged Carlos Baldomir for the WBC International Welterweight Title but was disqualified after two headbutts. He won the African Boxing Union welterweight title. In 2005, he defeated Marcos Primera to win the interim WBC Continental Americas Light Welterweight Championship. He challenged World Boxing Organization champion Antonio Margarito but broke his hand in the fourth round. Clottey defeated Zab Judah for the IBF welterweight title in 2008 before losing to Miguel Cotto in 2009.
