What is Josh Hamilton’s Net Worth and Salary?
Josh Hamilton is a former American baseball player who has a net worth of $50 million. During his career, he was a five-time MLB All-Star and won the American League Most Valuable Player Award.
Unfortunately, Josh’s career was seriously derailed by injuries and substance abuse issues. While this affected how the team viewed him, Hamilton continued to excel throughout his career, even as he struggled with serious issues behind the scenes. He’s one of the few MLB players to hit four home runs in a game.
During his baseball career, Josh Hamilton earned just $140 million in salary. At the peak of his career, Josh was one of the highest-paid players in the league, earning $28 million a year.
early life
Joshua Holt Hamilton was born on May 21, 1981 in Raleigh, North Carolina. He proved his baseball talent while playing for the high school team. After graduation, as he approached the 1999 MLB draft, he was one of the most popular prospects. He then signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays with a $3.96 million signing bonus. Before his major league debut, Hamilton was already battling drug problems and failing at least one drug test.
Profession
In 2006, he was drafted by the Chicago Bears, who immediately traded him to the Cincinnati Reds for $100,000. He was then traded to the Texas Rangers in 2008. He has reached a fairly high level during his time with this team. He then signed a five-year, $125 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim before finally leaving the Texas Rangers in 2015 for a second time with the Texas Rangers. By 2017, it was clear that the stubborn injury to his left knee wasn’t going away, when he re-injured his right knee that year while undergoing rehab. Then he retired.
drug abuse
Josh Hamilton’s life story cannot be told without mentioning his struggle with substance abuse. This has influenced many other aspects of his career and life. After a considerable battle with substance abuse, Josh was finally cleared after confronting his grandmother in 2005. He also credited Jesus for bringing him “back from the brink.” In 2008, he announced that he had not used any drugs since 2005. As his substance abuse problems became widely known, Hamilton was forced to regularly provide MLB urine samples throughout his career. Josh complied without any problems. His teammates were also well aware of his struggles, which led them to celebrate major wins by drinking ginger ale instead of champagne.
Unfortunately, Hamilton relapsed in 2009. Photos of Hamilton shirtless at the bar have been released. He was accompanied by several women and witnesses said he was asking where he could buy cocaine. These witnesses also remembered Hamilton bragging about his plans to go to a strip club later that night. Still, Josh is not shown drinking or taking drugs in any of the photos.
Hamilton later confirmed the alleged incident did occur, admitting he had little memory of the entire night. In 2012, he had a second relapse after drinking a few drinks. In 2015, he relapsed again. This time, he used both cocaine and alcohol.
Legal Issues
Despite his well-known problems with cocaine and other illicit substance abuse, Hamilton has not dealt with any notable criminal charges related to drug use or possession. However, he did suffer serious criminal consequences after beating his eldest daughter. He was formally charged in 2019 with assaulting a child, a third-degree felony. He was indicted in 2020 and reportedly faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

relation
Over the years, Josh was married to a woman named Kate Chadwick. Kate, the daughter of Michael Chadwick, was a huge help in Hamilton’s struggle with drug addiction. Kate and Josh started dating in 2002 and married in 2004. Josh divorced Katie after 11 years of marriage after relapsing and taking drugs again in 2015. During their relationship, they had three children together. The family also includes a child from Katie’s previous relationship.
Hamilton’s wife later said she was “completely caught off guard” by the divorce and felt it all came out of nowhere. Multiple outlets reported that Josh found out she was cheating on him, but Katie later vehemently denied those claims. It was clear that Josh was the one who filed for divorce.
real estate
Hamilton made two notable real estate transactions in 2016. First, he sold his Newport Beach, California home. He was awarded a $12.5 million home in the gated community of Crystal Cove. Originally built in 2013 to a design by renowned architect Will Hosband, the home features Provencal-style architecture, six bedrooms and less than 11,000 square feet of living space. Other highlights include a double-sided fireplace, beamed ceilings, game room, home theater, wine cellar, eight-car garage, elevator, infinity pool and fountain.
The home also sits on a half-acre lot with views of the surrounding coastline and harbour. Originally, the home was listed for $16.5 million. The price then dropped to $14.9 million before it sold for $12.5 million. Hamilton originally bought the property in 2013 for $12 million, meaning his profit margin was relatively low. Since he was divorcing at the time, he was probably in a hurry to sell, as property division could be an issue.
Also in 2016, Hamilton listed his Texas residence. The home in Westlake is listed for $3.43 million. Located in an affluent community on a golf course, the property has five bedrooms, 9,800 square feet of living space, a swimming pool with waterfall, and over an acre of general land. Other highlights include wainscoting and four stone fireplaces.
