He starred in more than 100 films and used his popularity to transition into politics. Estrada is a member of the PMP Party and is also affiliated with the National Party, Liberal Party, UNA and the Communist Party of the Philippines. From 1969 to 1986, he served as mayor of San Juan, Metro Manila. Estrada served as a Philippine Senator from 1987 to 1992. From 1992 to 1997, he chaired the Presidential Anti-Crime Commission under President Fidel Ramos. He also served as the 11th Vice President of the Philippines under President Ramos from 1992 to 1998. Joseph married Dr. Luisa Pimentel Ejercito in 1959. In 2001, he was ousted in a popular uprising. He was convicted of taking bribes and kickbacks during his presidency, sentenced to life in prison and fined more than $15 million. He was later pardoned by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
