Velma played at Coral Gables High School and received an athletic scholarship to the University of Miami. A linebacker, he won the BCS National Championship in Miami in 2001 and was a finalist for the Butkus Award.
Velma was selected 12th overall by the New York Jets in the 2004 NFL draft. He played for the Jets from 2004 to 2007 before being traded to the New Orleans Saints in 2008. In 2009, he signed a five-year deal worth $34 million with New Orleans. Verma won the Super Bowl with the Saints in 2010. He was a three-time Pro Bowl selection in 2005, 2009 and 2010. He was also a member of the 2009 NFC champion Saints. Verma was named AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2004.
