Jonathan Demme is an American film producer. He has directed, produced and written various feature films and documentaries. His popular projects include Silence of the Lambs (1991), Philadelphia (1993) and Rachel Married (2008). Robert Jonathan Demme was born on February 22, 1944 in Baldwin, New York. His parents were Dorothy and Robert. He has two brothers, Rick and Peter. Demme attended Southwest Miami High School and then the University of Florida. He dropped out before finishing his degree.

Demme began working as a film critic for the school newspaper while in college. He then teamed up with producer Joseph E. Levine and later served as director Roger Coleman’s publicist. Demme co-wrote and produced “Here Comes the Angel” (1971) and “The Hot Box” (1972). His directorial debut was the exploitation film, Caged Heat (1974). Other films that followed included Crazy Moms (1975), Careful Handling (1977) and Melvin and Howard (1980). Demme directed the romantic war drama, Swing Shift (1984), starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. He won the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Documentary for his concert film “Stop Reasoning” (1984).
Demme won an Academy Award for Best Director for the horror thriller Silence of the Lambs (1991). The film stars Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins. Demme continued his success with the drama Philadelphia (1993), which focused on the AIDS crisis and homophobia. Actor Tom Hanks won his first Best Actor Oscar for the role of “Andrew Beckett.” Demi’s other films include The Favourite (1998), The Manchurian Candidate (2004) and Rachel Married (2008). He has also directed some music videos and TV shows.
