Johnny Weir is an American figure skater and 2-time Olympian from Coatesville, Pennsylvania. His accolades include a 2-time Grand Prix Final Bronze Medalist, 3-time U.S. Figure Skating Champion and the 2001 World Junior Figure Skating Champion. John Gavin Weir was born on July 2, 1984 in Coatsville, Pennsylvania. He spent his early years in Quarryville. His father John was a football linebacker in high school and his mother Patty was a home inspector. He has a younger brother named Brian. Before skating, Will preferred to ride horses. He entered and won several equestrian events at the age of 10. The family eventually moved to Little Britain, Connecticut, so that he could receive proper training. It wasn’t until the age of 12 that Weir began to seriously pursue skating. In 1996, his newfound passion led the family to move to Newark, Delaware. Will attended Newark High School and then the University of Delaware. He studied linguistics before dropping out to focus on skating.

In addition to Newark (Delaware), Will has trained in Simsbury (Connecticut), Wayne (NJ) and Moscow (Russia). He has worked with coaches Viktor Petrenko, Priscilla Hill and Galina Zmievskaya. In 2001, Will participated in the World Junior Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria and won a gold medal. He went up against the likes of Evan Lesacek. From 2004 to 2006, Weir won three consecutive US National Championships. Weir participated in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. He finished 5th and 6th respectively. Will was the subject of the documentary Popstar on Ice (2009). He appeared on the Sundance Channel reality series “Be Good Johnny Weir.”

Will officially retired from competitive skating in 2013. The following year, he was selected by NBC as a commentator for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. He was accompanied by commentator Terry Gannon and 1998 Olympic gold medalist Tara Lipinski. Will starred as “Gabriel Richardson” in the Netflix sports series Spinning Out (2020).
