John Sanders is a Canadian-born American sports journalist and television personality. He has spent most of his career working for ESPN and ABC. Sanders was born on February 2, 1955 in Ontario, Canada. He played hockey in the Montreal Youth League and Western Michigan University. Sanders continued his hockey career at Ryerson University, where he played two seasons for the Rams.
Profession
In 1978, Sanders served as news director for CKNS Radio in Ontario. He later served as a sports anchor for CKNY-TV, followed by ATV News and later CITY-TV. Saunders went to the United States in 1982 to look for a job opportunity. He was a sports anchor for WMAR-TV in Baltimore for four years.
Sanders began his tenure with ESPN in 1986. Beginning in 1987, he served as NFL prime-time co-host for two years. Sanders played game-by-game for the Toronto Raptors from 1995 to 2001. He replaced Dick Sharp as ESPN’s “Sports Reporter” in 2001. Sanders hosts a number of shows, including the NFL on SportsCenter and NBA Shootaround on ESPN. He received the Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Sports Personality in 2005. His book Wounded: My Journey of Despair is scheduled to be published in April 2017.
