John Bolton is an American attorney, diplomat, and the 25th U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. He succeeds HR McMaster as US National Security Advisor (9 April 2018 to 10 September 2019). John Robert Bolton was born on November 20, 1948 in Baltimore, Maryland. His mother, Virginia, was a housewife and his father, Edward, was a firefighter. Bolton spent his childhood at Yale Heights. He attended McDonough College, Yale College, and Yale Law School. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1970 and his Juris Doctor degree in 1974. He is also a member of the Yale Political Union.

Bolton began his legal career in 1974 with the law firm “Covington & Burling”. From 1974 to 1981, he was a partner in the Washington office. He later served as Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Division under President Ronald Reagan from 1988 to 1989. He was named George 18th Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizational Affairs under President HW Bush. He also served as Senior Vice President of the American Enterprise Institute (1997-2001).
During the George W. Bush administration, Bolton served as Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs (2001-05). He served as US ambassador to the United Nations from August 2005 until his resignation in December 2006. Bolton served as Mitt Romney’s foreign policy adviser during the 2012 presidential election. In September 2015, he was appointed Senior Advisor to Liberty Capital Investment Management. Bolton served as the 27th U.S. National Security Adviser during Donald Trump’s administration. He held the above positions from April 9, 2018 until his resignation on September 10, 2019. He was succeeded by Charles Kupperman.
