John Ollerud was born in Seattle, Washington in 1968 and played college baseball in single base at Washington State University. He suffered a brain aneurysm in college, but continued to play in the 1989 season, earning Pac-10 North All-League Designated Hitters honors.
Ollerud made his professional debut with the Toronto Blue Jays on September 3, 1989. He played with the Blue Jays until 1996 before joining the New York Mets (1997-1999), Seattle Marines (2000-2004), New York Yankees (2004) and Boston Red Sox (2005). Ollerud’s last game was against the Red Sox on October 2, 2005. He was a two-time MLB All-Star in 1993 and 2001. Ollerud won the American League batting championship in 2993. He is a three-time Golden Glove winner (2000, 2002, 2003), and a two-time World Series champion with the Toronto Blue Jays (1992 and 1993). He was named the greatest infield player of all time by Sports Illustrated. He received the college baseball award that bears his name, the John Olerud Two-way Player of the Year Award.
