John McCain is an American politician, US state senator, 2008 Republican presidential candidate and veteran. He was born in Coco Solo, Panama on August 29, 1936, and his real name is John Sidney McCain III. His mother Roberta is an oil heir, and his father John McCain Jr. is a U.S. Admiral. He has two siblings, Sandy and Joe. McCain attended Anglican High School (1954) and then the U.S. Naval Academy (1958). He graduated from the Flying School in 1960 and from the National War College in 1974.

McCain served as a naval pilot during the Vietnam War. He drove a ground attack aircraft, but was shot down and captured by North Vietnam on October 26, 1967. He was performing his 23rd air mission at the time. From 1967 to 1973, McCain was captured and tortured as a prisoner of war. He rejected multiple proposals for early release in order to stay true to the military code of conduct. On March 14, 1973, McCain spent nearly 6 years in various concentration camps, after which he was free. He was released a few weeks after the ceasefire in Vietnam took effect. After returning home, McCain was awarded the Purple Heart, Silver Star and Bronze Star. He retired from the post of Captain of the Navy in 1981.
McCain was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1982, a position he held until 1987. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1986, replacing Arizona’s Barry Goldwater. He was elected to the US House of Representatives for the fourth time in 2010. He also served as the chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee and later the Senate India Affairs Committee. McCain ran but lost to George W. Bush in the 2000 Republican nomination for president. He was nominated in 2008, but lost to the Democratic candidate Barack Obama in the presidential election.

John McCain passed away on August 25, 2018, at the age of 81. According to reports, his cause of death was glioblastoma (brain cancer). In July 2017, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He died the day after he stopped cancer treatment.
