John Mahoney is an Anglo-American actor and voice artist. He co-starred in “Martin Crane” in the sitcom Frasier (1993-2004) and as the “Lt. Rosselli” series Chicago Story (1982). His works include Say Anything (1989), Dan in Real Life (2007), Healing and Cleveland Fever. Charles John Mahoney was born on June 20, 1940 in Blackpool, England. His father Reg is a baker and his mother Margaret is a housewife. He has 7 siblings, including Vera and Bernard. Mahoney studied at St. Joseph’s College in Blackpool. He immigrated to the United States and joined the American army when he was a teenager. He became a US citizen in 1959. Mahoney received a bachelor’s degree from Quincy University in Illinois. In 1976, he completed a master’s degree in English at Western Illinois University.

Before acting, Mahoney served as a university professor at Western Illinois University. He teaches English literature. He also served as a medical order officer and medical journal editor in the 1970s. Mahoney started his acting career in his 30s. He was first exposed to performing at the Stretford Children’s Theatre in Manchester, England. Many years later, he will join the St. Nicholas Theater Company. He joined the Steppenwolf Theater in 1977 and won the Clarence Derwent Award for Most Promising Newcomer. Mahoney’s early works include The Water Engine and Orphans. In 1986, he won a Tony Award for his performance in John Guare’s “The House of Blue Leaves.” Mahoney played “Lieutenant. Rosselli” in the NBC short series Chicago Story (1982). His films in the 1980s included Tin Men (1987) with Richard Dreyfuss, Moonstruck (1987) with Cher, and 8 Men with John Cusack (1988). He appeared across from Albert Finney in the HBO TV movie The Image (1990).

Mahoney played “Martin Crane” in the hit NBC sitcom “Fraser”. His performance earned him a SAG Award and 2 Emmy Awards and 2 Golden Globe nominations. The main actors of the show also include Kelsey Grammer, Jane Levi’s and David Hyde Pierce. It was broadcast for 11 seasons from September 1993 to May 2004. Other TV shows include HELP, The Human Factor, Becker, ER, In Treatment, Burn Notice and Hot in Cleveland. Mahoney played supporting roles in the 1990s films Barton Fink (1991) and The Hudsucker Proxy (1994). Both films were directed and edited by the Coen brothers (Joel, Ethan). Other well-known movies include In the Line of Fire (1993), Reality Bites (1994), President of the United States (1995) and Dan in Real Life (2007). Mahoney voiced “Grebs” in Antz (1998) and “Shannon Rogard” in The Iron Giant (1999). His dubbing works also include Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), Cronk’s New Rhythm (2005) and The Simpsons.

John Mahoney died on February 4, 2018, at the age of 77. According to reports, the cause of his death was complications of laryngeal cancer. He died at the hospice hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Mahoney is 5 feet 8 inches tall and of Irish descent. Before his death, his personal net worth was estimated at 16 million U.S. dollars. His sister Vera Sullivan (Vera Sullivan) survived.
